Job Hunting and Social Media

Many of us in social media over the past few years have been touting the power and the risks associated with both personal and professional social media activity.   For those many professionals out there job hunting in this highly competitive market, there is now a blurring of the lines of our personal (Facebook) and professional (LinkedIn) as employers look to recruit and hire the best individual for the job.   A recent article published in eMarketer, gives some survey results showing that 45% of all HR professionals are using social networks in their recruiting process, and I believe this number will continue to grow.

I have strongly encouraged those close to me job hunting or business building to leverage the power of LinkedIn, and this recent survey helps quantify that more tangibly.  From a personal perspective, LinkedIn has been one of the most powerful tools in building our business, Big Couch Media Group.  Conversely, I  have also strongly cautioned family (OK - my teenagers) and friends to be sensitive to what you post on sites such as Facebook (pictures, political views, etc).  Although Facebook is an incredible forum for sharing, staying in touch, and reconnecting; it  also could be a detriment to your "personal brand".

A holistic social media strategy should be carefully developed and executed upon whether for you personally or your business.
